NUJ ZONE B APPEALS TO THE SIX GOVERNORS IN THE SOUTH WEST STATES TO  PARTNER WITH JOURNALISTS ACROSS THE ZONE TOWARDS ENSURING ADEQUATE PUBLICITY

By The NewsPostage

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B, has appealed to the six governors in the South West to partner with Journalists across the zone towards ensuring adequate publicity of their programmes and policies, and fostering understanding between them and the citizens.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B, comprising all the states in the South West, recently made this appeal during the zonal meeting of the Union held on Wednesday 24th September 2025, in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The meeting, which was presided over by the Vice President, Zone B, Comrade Ronke Samo, was well attended by chairmen and secretaries of all South West State Councils of the NUJ.

The meeting, which deliberated extensively on matters affecting the union and the nation, resolved as follows:

1. The zone appealed to the six governors in the South West States to partner with journalists across the zone towards ensuring adequate publicity of their programmes and policies, and fostering understanding between them and the citizens.

2. It noted that the media, as the fourth estate of the realm, deserves more government’s attention and therefore enjoined state governments across the Southwest to prioritise the welfare of journalists, especially revamping facilities at public media organisations.

3. The Zone frowned at indiscriminate use of the Cybercrime Act against journalists, leading to the arrest and detention of a number of journalists across the country lately.

It asserted that the media remains the voice of the people and it must not be gagged under any guise.

4. The Zone commended the National President of the union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, for his finesse and professionalism in handling the affairs of the union, noting that his leadership style has justified the confidence reposed in him by members nationwide.

5. The union leaders equally passed a vote of confidence on the Kayode Babatuyi-led State Working Committee of Ekiti State Council of the NUJ. The Union leaders noted that infrastructural development under the watch of the current crop of the State Executive is unprecedented and urged all members of the union to work seamlessly with the leadership to build an enviable Council.

6. The Zone commended Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, for the infrastructural development, which his administration has provided for the people of the state.

The South West leaders of the union noted that the tour of some projects in the state availed them first-hand knowledge of some of the giant strides of the governor. They urged Ekiti people to ensure the tempo is sustained. The Union therefore described the governor as focused and dedicated to the development of Ekiti State and her people.

8. The zone renewed its call on the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to as a matter of urgency fix deplorable federal roads in the South West, particularly Ado-Aramoko-Itawure- Ilesa Road; Akure-Ilesa- Ibadan Road; Ibadan-Abeokuta road; Ado Ekiti -Ikare Akoko road; which are now becoming death traps.
