Amotekun should be upgraded to state police —Adewunmbi

The Amotekun Corps Commander in Osun, Gen. Bashir Adewunmbi (rtd) , has advocated for formation of state police to straightened the security in South west states in Nigeria.
He soaid south West officers of Amotekun form a “State Police” to further strengthened the security architecture of the region and ensure safety of lives and properties .
The corps commander said such step would enhanced community policing through closer ties between communities and their police force fostering trust and cooperation among the people .
The commander stated this in an interview with Newsmen in osogbo on Sunday , called for more sophisticated weaponry for amotekun officers to enable them effectively complement the tireless efforts of other sisters security agencies.
His words ” Amotekun has all what it takes to be converted to state police due to its bravery , familiarity with strategic terrains and also calibre of officers who are professional hunters , local vigilantes , retired security personnel among others .
” I am in full support of state police being clamour in the country and it will help compliment the effort of other security agencies.
” We need officers who knows the terrain , able to flush out criminals and also easy to identified strategic areas when the need arises,” Adewunmbi said .
According to him,amotekun should be given the sole right to also prosecute criminals in courts because of some specialised professionals who are lawyers among them .
” We have lawyers who are legally sound and can prosecute any criminal to the highest court of the land .
” The issue of arresting and handing such culprits to the police or DSS can be done by our men . We have professionals among us”.
He ,however , said plans are ongoing to laise with the state”s assembly towards ensuring that amótekun corps’ aspirations and desires are met in due course .
